The Bach Flower Remedies or essences as they are sometimes called, represent a unique and remarkable branch of healing. While sometimes seen as more akin to homeopathy than herbalism, they nevertheless are one of the most revolutionary approaches to treatment of disease and ill health in a long time.

Dr Edward Bach their discoverer, considered these remedies "a perfect system…..free from science, a god-sent gift,…..simple as everything in Nature is simple."

The remedies are prescribed not directly for a physical complaint, but for the client's emotional state, worry, fear, depression, and so on. Dr. Bach believed these states of mind or moods not only hinder recovery to health, but are the primary causes of sickness and disease.

Background History

In order to more fully understand this startlingly simple and unusual approach, it is helpful to know something of the discoverer himself. Dr Bach graduated in medicine in 1913 in London and after some time in private practice took up a position as bacteriologist in a London homeopathic hospital where he exhibited a special genius for research. During his years of practice he noted that patients responded to different treatments more through similarities in personality rather than physical symptoms. In other words, the same treatment did not always cure the same disease.

As a bacteriologist and pathologist he discovered that certain intestinal germs were closely linked with some forms of chronic disease. By making vaccines from these bacteria he was responsible for saving thousands of lives during an influenza epidemic in 1918.

However because the preparation of these vaccines involved the use of disease products, he was not content, despite his flourishing Harley St. practice and his brilliant scientific discoveries. His dream was to find simple, safe, effective remedies, which come directly from Nature. So at he height of his career at age 43, he sold all he owned, disbanded his medical practice and his laboratories and set off to search the wilderness of Great Britain to find healing in the flowers and herbs of his native countryside. One by one, his instincts led him to the wild plants whose essence contained the special properties he sought.

After his death in 1936, those who had worked with him continued Dr. Bach's work of preparing and distributing his remedies. The Dr. Bach Healing Centre in Sotwell, England operates to this day from the same cottage in which Dr. Bach had lived and worked. The 38 Remedies known as the Bach Flower Remedies are still available in Australia and all over the world.

The rationale

In Dr. Bach's book "Heal Thyself", he explained his theory and the working of the Remedies. The essential message is that the real cause of disease lies within. Ill health and physical dysfunction, are not merely outwardly physical phenomena, but symptoms of a deeper problem. Physical health is but a reflection of our mental states or moods. Bach exhorted his readers to "seek within themselves the real origin of their maladies," and that "disease ……is not material, but the ultimate result produced in the body of deep and long-acting forces." It is these inner forces which ultimately determine one's health and happiness. The Remedies act by reversing the negative mood, state of mind, to replace them with their polar opposite, leaving the whole person in a state of harmony where vital power can be restored and the body enabled to heal itself. For example fear is replaced by courage and confidence, anger and rage with good will and cheerfulness, lack of self confidence with self assurance and so on.

Dr. Bach's key words were Treat the patient, not the disease.
